Even 2000 years ago, the Celts, the Gaul’s and later on the Romans have all cultivated the vine in the Moselle valley before the monasteries took over in the middle Ages and extended the vineyards to a large part of the country. The Moselle valley is a region in north-eastern France, south-western Germany, and eastern Luxembourg, centered on the river valley formed by the Moselle, and gives the opportunity to travel trough small traditional medieval towns and traditional villages.
The Moselle Valley offers magnificent vineyards landscapes, sophisticated cuisine and exclusive wines from the region. August marks the ripening of the grapes ready for September harvest. The vineyards are mostly known for its dry white wines.

Chocolate lovers can revel in the sweet smell of excess during a weekend festival planned in San Francisco Sept. 11-12.
The 15th annual Ghirardelli Square Chocolate Festival, expected to draw 40,000 chocoholics, will feature chocolatiers, artisans and chefs showcasing chocolate delicacies and desserts. In addition, the two-day event will offer family-friendly activities such as a “hands-free” ice cream sundae-eating contest in which participants dive head-first into giant sundaes.
The festival is free, but tickets for chocolate tastings cost $20 for 15 samples. Tickets may be purchased online in advance or on the day of the event, which will be held at the Ghirardelli Square complex, 900 Point St.
Throughout the weekend, visitors can indulge in chocolate delicacies, listen to live music by local bands, view chef demonstrations and participate in wine-pairing seminars. Artisan vendors will staff chocolate- sampling stations set up throughout Ghirardelli Square and along Beach Street. Overall, more than 35 chocolate vendors and restaurants will participate.
All proceeds generated during the two-day festival will go to Project Open Hand, a San Francisco nonprofit organization that provides meals and groceries to senior citizens and critically ill individuals. Over the last 15 years, the festival has raised more than $500,000 for Project Open Hand.

Outside, it’s a sun-baked 90 degrees, and even the palm trees that line the parking lot aren’t moving. Inside, however, it’s a different story: People are bundled up in black parkas, skiing down a 437-yard-long slope (four football fields, plus) at Ski Dubai, the city’s monster indoor ski park.
Ski Dubai, which cost $275 million to construct, opened in 2005. It boasts five ski runs of varying steepness and a chairlift that reaches to the top, 25 stories above ground. (Developers claim that it’s the first indoor ski slope with a “black diamond” run.) There’s even a quarter-pipe for snowboarders, sledding runs for the less daring and a play area for kids with a snowball shooting gallery, ice cave and 3-D theater.
The complex covers 5½ acres and can accommodate up to 1500 visitors at a time. The temperature inside it kept at a chilly 28 degrees, but at night it’s lowered even further to allow artificial snow machines to do their work.
From the bottom, if you look up the slopes, it appears to be a paradise for night skiers, the white snow stretching up and out of sight and the lights in the huge canopied ceiling spread out like stars.
The price of admission is reasonable, at least by Dubai standards: $27 for admission to the facility ($24 for children). Access to the ski slopes is more: $49 for adults and $40 for children for a two-hour pass during peak times.
But a lot of visitors and locals, some dressed in sandals and traditional Arab robes and head coverings, choose instead to sit in one of the faux-Swiss cafes outside the ski runs where a glass partition makes the temperatures a bit more moderate. Sipping hot chocolate and looking at posters of Gstaad may not be the best way to enjoy the slopes, but it’s all part of the experience.

The lure of Alaska, both for North Americans and international visitors, lies in its stunning scenery, abundant wildlife and colorful Native American culture, along with the state’s pioneering spirit. When you wake up in the middle of the night on a cruise and look out to see the light of a single cabin in miles of pitch-black darkness, you get a glimpse into the self-sufficiency of the Alaskan way of life today.
Cruise lines have been very skilled at getting their passengers access to the Alaskan way of life by bringing Alaskans onboard and taking guests into the Great Land to see its immense beauty in greater depth. Of the state’s regions, the most traveled to is the Inside Passage, variously measured from 800-1,300 miles in length. It consists of a series of passages along the coast, most of which are places sheltered by islands from the open Pacific Ocean, reaching into the fjords at its northern end. Most of the passage is in southeastern Alaskan Panhandle, some of it is located in British Columbia and a little part of it also lies in Washington.
The Alaska portion of the Inside Passage contains approximately 1,000 islands, thousands of coves and towns that bears strong traces of the state’s colorful history: Haines, Icy Strait Point, Juneau, Ketchikan, Petersburg, Sitka, Skagway and Wrangell.
List of cruise lines sailing Alaska for the 2011 season:
Disney Cruise Line
For the first time, Disney Cruise Line will enter the Alaska market with the 1,754-passenger Disney Wonder sailing seven-day cruises roundtrip from Vancouver and visiting Tracy Arm, Skagway, Juneau and Ketchikan from $2,086 per person.

Holland America Line’s 2011 Alaska season will continue the line’s new 14-day Alaskan Adventurer itinerary, introduced this year aboard the 1,380-passenger Amsterdam. The cruise is roundtrip from Seattle and includes Hubbard Glacier and Glacier Bay National Park on most sailings, along with Tracy Arm, Juneau, Icy Strait Point, Anchorage, Homer, Kodiak, Hubbard Glacier, Sitka and Victoria, priced from $1,999 per person.
Princess Cruises
Princess Cruises has announced that Glacier Bay National Park has been added to select 2011 sailings of the 2,600-passenger Golden Princess for the seven-day Inside Passage itinerary. The itinerary, which sails roundtrip from Seattle, calls in Juneau, Ketchikan, Tracy Arm and Victoria, and is priced from $649 per person.
